This aptitude is important because you will be dealing with people’s medical information, an error in which can impact someone’s safety. For starters, you need an above-average command over the English language. And this is obvious because you have to put meaning and sense into the medical records. Also, you need to be proficient in handling a word processor.

You should be capable of working independently. A medical transcriptionist should be able to work on his/her own, without supervision. This requires extreme maturity and discipline. In fact, you should be capable to research independently. You have to refer to external materials and research in case of a difficult medical record.

As a medical transcriptionist, you have to keep updating your medical knowledge almost on a daily basis. So, you should be willing to make that effort.

You should possess analytical skills. In the medical transcription profession, you are required to analyze information logically to render meaning to medical records.

The nature of work is such that it may get boring in the long run. You have to keep motivating yourself.

The above-mentioned skills are not something a course can develop in you. So, even before joining a medical transcription course, you will now whether or not you are ready for the profession.
