Understanding the Challenges in Medical Transcription

Medical Transcription Jobs

What is the biggest challenge in medical transcription? As an aspiring medical transcriptionist, you will ask this question many a times. And you are likely to get different responses from different people. Now, the biggest challenge depends on you. My one word response to the question has always been learning. However, it is up to you to decide what exactly is a challenge and what is not. And it will take a while. You will get the real picture only when you start working.

So, what could become a challenge in medical transcription. One of my very confident acquaintances took up freelance medical transcription to be his own boss. While that made sense given that the profession offers you that flexibility, it was later found out that the man took up some other profession soon after. Apparently, he did not realize the daunting task of keeping away from the distractions at home. Now, this could happen to any home-based professional. Some other people quit the medical transcription profession midway because they realize they cannot motivate themselves long enough.

As I mentioned earlier, I think learning is a big challenge in medical transcription. This is because, as adults, we do not want to learn after we start working. But in medical transcription, one is supposed to keep learning regularly in order to update one’s medical knowledge. Now, not everyone is interested in learning or even willing to make that effort.

Deadlines and quality goals in medical transcription are definitely challenging but they are more expectations than challenges. As a medical transcriptionist, you have got to meet deadlines, ensure high quality of medical records, and ensure the confidentiality of medical information. So, do you think you are ready?
