As a home-based medical transcriptionist, you will have a lot on your mind including deadlines and domestic responsibilities. Keeping a balance between your professional and personal lives can be quite a task. Here are a few tips to help you remain in control.
- Keep medical transcription aids in your reach. Make sure you have the medical spell-checker, the medical abbreviation expander, the American Association for Medical Transcription (AAMT) style guide, and all reference materials available when you start work.
- Don’t work beyond your working hours. And don’t attend to domestic chores during your working hours.
- Don’t commit to work you cannot handle. You may be able to handle some work but you are at a risk of losing your credibility if you take too much on your plate.
- Take breaks on completion of logical sets of tasks. If you take arbitrary breaks, you will risk wasting time and spoiling your work flow.
- When you make a routine, make sure there is time for your meals and a little exercise. An unhealthy body and a stressed mind won’t be able to help you remain productive.
- If you receive incomprehensible recordings regularly, let the doctors making the recordings know. They may not be aware that they are sending you bad recordings.
- Don’t switch on the television during your breaks. Make it a point not to stray away when you have work pending. You can enjoy your time once you have completed all your work.
Every medical transcriptionist will discover his/her own strengths and weaknesses and come up with his/her dos and don’ts while working from home. The key to a good home-based career is dedication and discipline.
