The Association of Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) has come up with a competency profile (COMPRO) for medical transcription education, setting up a standard curriculum. Find out if the course you are choosing aligns with the recommendations in COMPRO. An arbitrary curriculum will not help you become a good medical transcriptionist. Do not enroll yourself into a course without understanding its curriculum.

Instructors
A course is as good as the proficiency of the instructor facilitating it. Enquire about the instructors before taking up a course. The instructors should have extensive experience in the field of medical transcription.

Practice
Theory cannot make you ready for a real job. You need to practice as much as you can. Find out how many hours of dictation the course offers. Also, find out if the dictations are real recordings by doctors. Recordings by actors will not prepare you for the job ahead.

Placement assistance
Find out if the course provides any placement assistance after the successful completion of the course. The training institute offering you the medical transcription training should either help you look for a job or provide some medical transcription assignments to start with.
