Home-based medical transcription requires extreme discipline, but I guess you already know that. Once you have prepared yourself mentally for the challenges the work will throw at you, it’s time to get going with other preparations. Here’s all that you need to take care of.
- Your home-office: Don’t convert any corner of your house into your office. Your office has to be spacious, comfortable, and peaceful. Make sure you find such a place before you commit to working from home.
- Office furniture and other needs: You will need not only a computer but also furniture for your office. Get all those things that will make you comfortable while you work.
- Phone: Arrange a separate phone for your work. You cannot afford to use your personal or home phone for business purposes.
- HIPAA-compliance: The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requires that you keep medical information secure and confidential. You have to ensure that you can take measures to conform to HIPAA guidelines.
- Family: You have to inform your family and friends of your decision and your working hours. They have to become aware of your decision and adjust to your work timings. Also, your friends should know when not to disturb you.
- Children: If you have young children at home, you need to make sure that they are attended to and take care of well while you are dealing with your deadlines.
If you can get these things taken care of, you are all set to start working on your first home-based medical transcription job. All the best!
